If you are having to self-isolate here are some English, Maths and Speech Therapy activities to keep your skills up at home. Your class teacher will set work for you on Tapestry, as soon as they have some ready, so please make sure you check daily.
English
Choose one of your favourite stories (or your school reading book) and complete one of the following activities:
- Retell the story to your grown up: Practice using your speech sounds and see if you can remember any good ‘vocab’ words from the story.
- Choose one picture from the book and write sentences to explain what is happening at that point in the story. Remember to use a capital letter and full stop in each sentence.
- Draw a story map to explain what happens in the story: Start with the beginning, then the middle and then the end. You could try and add sentences, labels or captions.
- Write a character description: He/she is…, he/she has…
Phonics
Practise your phonics by using the games on Phonics Play. Click on the resources tab as these games can be accessed free. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources Select phases 2, 3, and 4 and revise all the sounds by playing a variety of games.
Look at the tricky words for phase 2 and 3. Practice reading, writing and spelling these words.

Reading – Daily
Try and spend at least 10 minutes reading either your school book or a book from home. See if you can talk about the story afterwards.
Maths
Practice all of our maths skills:
- See how far you can count. Keep practicing to see if you can get higher each time.
- Order numbers from 0 to 20 / 50 / 100! You might want to write numbers down on pieces of paper first to do this – remember the correct formation.
- Using lego/pasta/cars, grab a handful and count accurately how many you have. Line them up to check you have got it right. Keep practicing this skill. To make it more challenging, take two handfuls and count how many in each hand before counting how many you have altogether.
- Practise your number bonds to 10 and 20 by going on to ICT games and choosing the ‘Save the whale’ game. https://www.ictgames.com/saveTheWhale/index.html
Speech Therapy Games
Choose from one of the games below and practice your targeted speech sounds whilst playing:
- I-Spy: Play a game of I-spy and see if you can give a really good, clear description to help your partner guess what it is. E.G. “I spy with my little eye something that is green and brown and grows”…. A plant!
Memory game: Get a tray or plate and place 5 different objects on it. Look at each object and name and describe each one. Look at the objects for one minute and then cover and secretly remove one object. Remove the cover and see if your child can say which object has gone. You can make this more challenging by adding more objects or taking two objects away.
