Active Travel

At Browick Road, we aim to be successful in supporting active travel to school, which includes cycling, walking and other forms of active travel. We are working to develop and deliver a Modeshift STARS accredited school travel plan with the help of our School Council and other children in the school.

We currently have a ‘Good’ level Modeshift STARS accreditation – see below for more information about how we achieved this!

Being more active for the school journey is a great way to keep us fit and healthy, teaches independence and road safety, and reduces air pollution, carbon emissions and congestion on the roads.

We hope that parents and carers can support us to encourage active and sustainable travel to school by motivating children to walk, cycle or scoot as often as possible, and to take part in activities we offer to improve road safety awareness and riding skills.

When travelling to school please:

  • Walk, scoot or cycle to school as much as possible
  • Be kind and courteous to others – say hi, be nice!
  • Give way to pedestrians
  • Consider wearing high-visibility/reflective clothing and use bicycle lights when dark
  • Follow the Highway Code.

Pick-up and drop-off times are busy outside schools. This can cause an increased safety risk to both children and parents.

Parking restrictions outside schools are there to keep you and your children safe. Parking inconsiderately can put people in danger and you also risk being fined. It’s important that motorists follow the Highway Code.

Most school entrances and exits in the UK have yellow zigzag road markings with the writing ‘School Keep Clear’. They indicate the part of the road where motorists should not wait, stop or park a vehicle.

Both yellow and white zigzags also show areas that must be kept clear so that children and other road users can see clearly when crossing the road.

Yellow zigzags, without accompanying signs, advise motorists not to wait or park there at any time for the safety of children and others. Norfolk Police can, and do, issue tickets for parking on them, based on causing an obstruction to other motorists or pedestrians.

Safety tips for parking outside schools

When picking up or dropping off children at school, you should do the following:

  • Allow yourself plenty of time as the area is likely to be busy.
  • Do not park on yellow zigzag lines and avoid parking opposite them.
  • If you decide to park further away, please be considerate of local residents and avoid blocking driveways or accessways.

Fines

Motorists can be issued with penalty charge notices (PCN) for waiting, stopping or parking on yellow zigzags if restrictions are in place.

Stopping in a restricted area outside a school will result in a higher fine. The fee is halved if paid within 14 days and you have 28 days to pay or challenge the fine.

In Reception, the children have been counting the bikes and scooters in the bike shed each day. This supports both their maths and understanding of healthy sustainable school journeys. They had great fun!

The children in Key Stage 2 have been learning about pedestrian safety with county expert, Roz Branchfield-Symonds. These online interactive sessions taught the children lots about staying safe near roads throughout the year.
