A karate taster session

Year 1’s karate taster session was lively and fun.  Through structured activities, the children participated in warm-up and basic techniques activities. Thank you, Verve Karate, for demonstrating the techniques and for building on the balance and coordination skills we previously learnt.

Painting in the style of Piet Mondrian

Year 1 made thick and thin paint marks on a range of surfaces. They used primary colours and the dip, dip, dab method of painting. After practising making controlled marks, they were ready to work in the style of Piet Mondrian. Initially, they painted in blocks of colours before creating their own shapes, painting within their shapes, and drawing black lines.  Look how accurately and carefully they are holding their paintbrushes.  Wonderful!

Kin Ball

Last Friday, we had 2 sports coaches teach us a sport called ‘Kin Ball’. Kin ball is a game played with a HUGE ball and 4 teams. One team has the ball and 5 people crouch down to hold the ball and then one person (the pusher) calls out a colour and smashes the ball. The chosen coloured team then has to work as a team to try and stop the ball hitting the floor. If they manage it, they get a point. If they don’t, the other team gets a point.

We really enjoyed it and will see you on the blog again soon!

Handa’s Surprise

For talk for writing this half term, we have been listening to the story of Handa’s surprise.  Our class received a letter asking for their help!  Fruit went missing around our school and they needed our help to find them.  We went on a journey around our school and managed to find them all – phew!  We also had the opportunity to draw different pieces of fruit using pastels and studying what they look like on the inside and out.  We had lots of fun tasting the different fruits and coming up with adjectives to describe them.

Let’s Talk About History

We have been learning about the Ancient Greeks in our history topic this year and, most recently, we were learning about the Battle of Marathon. Here are some of the highlights:

The Persians were going to invade Athens so they asked the Spartans for help. Pheidippides ran for two days and two nights to Sparta but the Spartans were busy with a religious ceremony so wouldn’t help until they finished. So Pheidippides ran all the way back to tell them the response. The Athenians had to fight the Persians alone. General Militiades used the phalanx formation and shocks the Persians with his tactic. They then go to the coast to try and suprise the Athenians but Pheidippides warned the Athenians so they were ready for the attack. After fighting, Pheidippides ran all the way into central Athens and said, “Well done to you, we’ve won.” Then he died of exhaustion.

Big Schools’ Birdwatch

This term in Denmark Class, our science topic is animals (including humans). This week we were learning about mammals and birds and tied our learning in with the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch. We learnt about different types of birds and recorded how many of each bird we could see around the school field. To help the birds over winter, we made our own bird feeders using lard and bird seed and will see if we can spot any more birds eating from our feeders over the next few weeks.
