Physical Computing with Micro:Bits
Welcome back to Spain class in 2026! Lets look at what we are doing in computing.
In computing this week, we have been exploring and playing with Micro:bits. Micro:bits are small computer’s that have 25 LEDs that can display pixelated words, pictures and more! If you connect it via Bluetooth to an iPad (which is what we have done) you can code using block coding on the Micro:bit app. We coded our own name badges and animations. Once correctly coded, you download them to the device and after a quick sec and with the right input, it appears!

Plants including trees
Throughout the autumn term, Year 1 has regularly observed changes in the school field. We discussed how seasonal changes affect the flowers, grass, and trees. In September, we predicted that the tree near our classroom would be bare by the winter, and we were correct. Now that it is bare, we can see the branches very clearly and can describe them. We have learnt observation and recording skills and will continue to use these as we make observations throughout the spring term.
It’s Pantomime Season
Our Christmas performance this year was: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Camelot. The show was a humorous rendition of the story of King Arthur and his quest to find Camelot with lots of funny lines, songs, dances and crowd participation throughout. Years 5 & 6 worked together and we really enjoyed making it – we hope the audience enjoyed it too. Below are just a few snapshots of the show. As you can see, our play included some brilliant costumes (thanks parents). We also hope you likes the dame’s jokes! “We’ll you soon – ta-ta!”

Structures
Year 1 explored how the size of a base affects a structure’s stability. We discussed what balance means and how it also affects stability. The children experimented with combinations of differently shaped and sized blocks, arranged in various ways to build a tower. We used our conclusions to agree on what makes a tower less likely to topple.
Martha Maps it Out – Geography
This week, we have been learning all about maps! We started by reading the story Martha Maps It Out and talking about where we live. The children explored a map of Wymondham and identified key human features such as schools, the library and the abbey.
The children then got creative by designing and building their own structures using junk modelling, which we then added to our very own class town. To bring everything together, we worked collaboratively to create a large map, adding shops, schools, and houses using colourful sugar paper. It was a fantastic way to combine geography skills with creativity!

‘Christmas in a Box’ with Hope Church.
Andy and Elisabeth from Hope Church in Wymondham visited Year 1 to deliver “Christmas in a Box”. The children participated in a retelling of the Christmas story, along with craft activities. We learnt about communities coming together at Christmas and why celebrations are important.
