We have had a fabulous few sessions at Forest School with Jules Jackdaw. The children have explored all the signs of autumn. They created some wonderful craft treasures such as crowns and necklaces using a range of hand tools and techniques. They explored the mud kitchen and showed fantastic teamwork in den building. We can’t wait for our next turn in Spring!

Science – Habitats
This week, Year 2 have been exploring the great outdoors on a very special habitat walk around our school grounds. We put on our explorer hats and set off to see what kinds of living things we could discover in the different areas around us.
We learned that habitats are the places where animals and plants live, and that even the smallest spaces can become a home for tiny creatures. As we walked, we spotted so many microhabitats—little hideouts where invertebrates like to live. Some were under logs, others beneath stones, and quite a few were tucked away in the long grass. The most exciting discoveries came when we explored our school garden.
All Different, All Special
In Denmark class we have been thinking about how we are all different and all special. We thought about our unique selves and looked at mirrors to closely study our features. The children made remarks such as “I have green eyes” and “I have light brown hair”. The children drew self portraits, thinking carefully about the features that made them unique.
We then thought about other ways in which we are all different and unique. We considered our personalities, skills, likes and dislikes with children remarking
“I am good at running.”
“I am creative.”
“I like pizza.”
“I don’t like tarantulas.”
We concluded that it was a really good thing that we are all different and that we each had many skills and qualities that made us special. Well done Denmark Class!
European Languages Day
Today was European Languages Day. The children in school had a fantastic afternoon of activities planned. We made our own passports to take with us. We started with an assembly looking at different flags, countries and why we might learn another language. Then we ‘boarded a flight’ to our destinations. Each Key Stage 2 teacher had activities designed around different countries and the children visited each one, learning about the country, the language and taking part in activities. We stamped the passports as we went along. Mrs Barber represented the Netherlands, and the children learned the greeting ‘Tag’ and to count to 5. We looked at Dutch food and art, then created gorgeous origami tulips!
Miss Wild represented Iceland with Volcanoes, Mrs Purvis represented Greece with Olympic activities and Mr Bamford represented Austria with a lovely yodelling tune! A fun time was had by all.

STEM Challenge
Last week, we did a STEM lego learning challenge which was really fun and tested our brains. We also learnt that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Altogether we did five lego challenges (such as designing and building a vehicle that could explore a planet), which were amazing and we all had a really good time building.

We are artists!
This half term we are focusing on the skill of ‘drawing’. We have been learning what drawing means and how we can use different pressure to create different marks on our paper. We have been using drawing pencils and charcoal to create different lines. We discovered that you can rub your pencil line to create a blurred look. This is called smudging. We also experimented with drawing on top of different textures to see if that would change the look of our pencil or charcoal lines.
